Fighting heat with heat

Summer 2026, in flight from the block heat pressing London you open the door of a nightclub and its correlate falls out. Marshall McLuhan determined in his 1964 book Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man that communication divides into “hot” and “cool” categories. The cool is scattered and full of space, like an easy conversation in a quiet place. Hot is thick, heavy with data, like that delivered by the assemblage of towers and subs, strobes, and beats which come at wetware like a wall: Louis Hardie’s images register this pharmakon of a club: that little dose of the poison that is also the cure.
